On Foley: Sydney’s Newest Art and Fashion Hub.

After months and months of preparation, the brand new shops at 9-21 Foley St. Darlinghurst are finally open. I came to the launching day to celebrate and congratulate my friends at Spunky Bruiser and Soto Smith.

Other shops to check out on Foley are: The Tribe (art, accessories, paintings, events), Fine Fellow (Men’s store, clothing, books, grooming) Studio Enti (ceramics and porcelain wares).

What I particularly admire about these shop owners is that they don’t just sell products; they obviously love what they do. I found a passionate community who takes pleasure in fostering creativity and rendering a smidgen of artistry and fun to people’s lives. Which is great because it’s so damn hard to even find locally designed, creative, and inspiring clothing for men in this town. “Sydney, where’s the colour??”, Ms. Wintour would definitely ask. I, too, am struggling.

But this colourful stairs give me hope.

Spunky Bruiser and The Tribe host musical events and/or art exhibition in their stores. It’s exciting and inspiring to see the gathering of talented people presenting their works in different categories in such a healthy and nurturing environment. I discovered the brilliant works of Sydney based artist Zeke’s Lunchbox during a store visit and immediately bought one of her soft sculptures.

Foley St. is still far from reaching level Harajuku as in Tokyo or 798 Art Zone like in Beijing, but the On Foley crew may hopefully incite a stronger art/fashion revolution in Sydney that will have its own unique vibe and identity.
